Asma Music

Here's some Asma music MP3s. This is stuff I wrote and recorded with various bands. Download, use, and abuse as you see fit (just let me know).

These samples are bits of solo music that I wrote, and on which I played all the instruments. I have ridiculous amounts of this stuff, so if you have any interest in it, just let me know and I'll send you more. Some of it has been used for movie trailers.

The Academy of Fists is a sometimes funky, sometimes moody organ trio. In addition to my own ham-fisted work on guitar, it's Kyle “12 tone” Olson on drums and percussion, and Bob “where's my wallet?” Long on Hammond B3. This project emerged out of the rubble of the collapsed Peking Turtle project, and it continues to play gigs and record albeit sporadically.

Peking Turtle was a phenomenally energetic and creative band that was fronted by dynamo vocalist Typhanie Monique Coller (aka T.monique). We played a fusion of jazz, funk, and rock, and played all over the Chicago acid-jazz scene. We released a CD in 2001 called “Airtite.” In addition to myself on guitar and Typh on vocals, Peking Turtle had Benjamin Dauer on bass, Bob Long on keys, and Kyle Olson on drums (also Shana Speigel on background vocals and Michael Jackson on sax). Check out Typhanie's website at www.tmonique.com.

Barnacle Souffle was a short-lived, strange, jazz band — the collective brainchild of friends Michael Jackson (sax), Dr. Ross Reed (trombone) and myself (bass). We wrote the material and then wrangled some excellent musician friends to perform it all at a recording studio with no rehearsal. We had John Beard on guitar, Rick Gehrenbeck on keys, Tim Anderson on percussion, and Dan Fliegel on drums. We released a CD in 1998.

I also recorded with a blues band called Howard and the White Boys that my friends and I started back in college (Howard McCullum, Dan Bellini, and Jim Christopulos). We had very good fortune early on and ended up opening gigs for B.B. King, and playing as Bo Diddley's band when he came through town. Eventually we found ourselves playing weekly gigs at Buddy Guy's “Legends” blues club in downtown Chicago. We toured with Buddy's band in the mid 90s, and released a solid modern blues CD entitled “Strung Out on the Blues” (Mighty Tiger Records). I had to leave the band in order to teach, but my friends carry on with Howard and the White Boys. Check out their website at www.howardandthewhiteboys.net.

Forthcoming solo music CD.
